Stretch, Breathe, Play: Doing Yoga at Home with Preschoolers

Yoga isn’t just for grown-ups—it’s a wonderful practice for young children too! Practicing yoga with preschoolers at home can be a fun and calming way to support their physical, emotional, and mental development. At all of our Learn And Play Schools, we love incorporating movement and mindfulness into our day, and yoga is a perfect way to continue those benefits at home.

Why is yoga beneficial for preschoolers?
Yoga helps children improve their balance, coordination, and flexibility—all important for growing bodies. It also supports emotional regulation by teaching them how to breathe deeply and slow down, especially during moments of big feelings. Regular practice can increase focus and concentration while also boosting confidence and self-awareness. Best of all, yoga can be playful and imaginative, which makes it ideal for this age group.

Tips for doing yoga at home:

  • Keep it simple and short. Just 5–10 minutes is enough to start.
  • Make it fun! Use animal poses like “downward dog,” “cat-cow,” or “butterfly” to keep it engaging.
  • Add a story or theme. Turn your yoga time into an adventure (e.g., a jungle safari or trip to the beach).
  • Model the moves. Kids love to mimic what they see—so do the poses with them!
  • End with relaxation. A few quiet moments lying down with soft music or guided breathing helps children feel calm and centered.

Yoga at home is a beautiful way to bond, get moving, and bring a little peace into your daily routine. Whether it’s part of your morning wake-up or a calm-down activity before bed, your child will benefit from the mindful movement—and so will you!
