From Splash Pads to STEM: Why Preschool Matters Once Summer Ends

Summer in Palo Alto has a rhythm all its own. The kids are out at Mitchell Park, running through the splash pad or chasing butterflies near the Magical Bridge playground. Parents grab a coffee near California Avenue and squeeze in one more picnic at the Baylands. Perhaps a visit to the Junior Museum & Zoo is in order. There are numerous fun activities to enjoy in and around Palo Alto, especially during the summer. Where else can a preschooler giggle at meerkats and learn about magnets on the same day?

But then comes September. [Read more…] about From Splash Pads to STEM: Why Preschool Matters Once Summer Ends

Preschool Power: Why Preschool Sets the Stage for Success (Especially in STEM!)

Let’s talk about preschool. Preschool is the exciting, curious stage of learning, marked by questions like, “Why is the sky blue?” At Learn And Play® Montessori School, we know this is where the magic begins. Preschool isn’t just daycare; our philosophy of preschool is quite different. It’s where your child starts building skills that will last a lifetime. We’re talking about STEM thinking, problem-solving, confidence, and a lifelong passion for learning.

What are the advantages of preschool for early learners? Here are some thoughts – both for parents and for children. [Read more…] about Preschool Power: Why Preschool Sets the Stage for Success (Especially in STEM!)

Spring Montessori-Inspired Activities to Do At Home

Spring season is full of wonder, growth, and sunshine—making it the perfect time to do hands-on nature activities with young children. Building Strong Readers: How Learn And Play Montessori Nurtures Literacy Success

A 2023 report rated American children’s reading ability as woefully inadequate compared to other wealthy countries. Yet reading is fundamental to learning – first, the child “learns to read,” and subsequently, the child “reads to learn.” You must prioritize reading at the earliest levels, as it is (obviously) a foundational skill. At Learn And Play Montessori School, we believe in working hard with every child to that he or she becomes “above average,” (hopefully way above average), and becomes a fluent reader by the time they graduate from our preschool curriculum. We build a solid foundation of language skills with early phonetics instruction, learning how to write through Montessori activities. We also emphasize “fun,” as we strive to make reading “fun,” including hands-on learning experiences. This strategy helps students develop the skills and passion needed for reading in the future. Learning Through Art

Art is often thought of as “something extra,” but art is a huge part of education and a major part of “being human.” Throughout our programs, we leverage art for fun and as a mechanism to help kids learn and to learn to love learning. Let’s discuss art! [Read more…] about Learning Through Art

Material Spotlight: Montessori Mathematical Golden Beads

Montessori Golden Beads teaches mathematical concepts such as linear counting, place value, basic arithmetic, and the decimal system. Using the Montessori hands-on approach, these materials allow our young learners to count units from ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. We use this strategy across our campuses, from Fremont to Hercules, Milpitas to Pleasant Hill, and across our many best-in-class preschool programs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

Combining independent learning with this sensorial mathematical activity builds curiosity within our Learn And Play® Montessori School students, engaging them in a way traditional math practices are unable to do successfully. Sensorial Activities to Do at Home

Our senses – taste, smell, touch, hearing, and sight – are the key way that we perceive the world. Kids instinctively know this, but Montessori-based learning helps kids to understand their senses, and how to interpret them. We use these throughout our preschool programs from Fremont to Milpitas, Hercules to San Carlos, Dublin to Irvington and everywhere between

Cognitive and language skills develop through the use of repetition and the interaction of children with their senses, environment, and surroundings, which all should start as early as possible in a systematic way. Teaching your kids to “label” each sense, and the words associated with the five senses not only encourages brain development and critical thinking, but also builds vocabulary through sensory play. Here are some at-home tips and ideas you can use to help your child really understand what’s going on with his or her senses. [Read more…] about Sensorial Activities to Do at Home
